President's Councilors Dinner
Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., received the Insignis Medal and Mr. Robert C. Barry received the John Edward Joyce Award at the annual President's Councilors Dinner on October 11 at Columbia Country Club.
In his welcoming remarks, Rev. James R. Van Dyke, S.J., Georgetown Prep's president, noted, "This evening is, indeed, a celebration. It is a celebration of our mission and identity—the essence of Georgetown Prep. It is the celebration of our exceptional young men and their journey to become men of competence, conscience, courage and compassion; men of faith and men for others. It is also a celebration of two of Georgetown Prep's very best: Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., and Mr. Robert C. Barry."
The John Edward Joyce Award is presented to a member of the faculty who exemplifies Georgetown Prep's core values and ideals in recognition of a deep commitment to the School and its students.
Mr. Barry has spent 47 years at Georgetown Prep. He was hired in the fall of 1971 to teach sophomores and direct the Prep Players. Mr. Barry directed the Prep Players for 10 years and produced over 20 shows before shifting to the Little Hoya, the School's newspaper, which he moderated for eight years. In 1980, Mr. Barry took over as the Junior Varsity Golf Coach and in 1984, began Prep's Varsity Golf Coach. He has been selected by The Washington Post as the All-Met Coach of the Year three times in his 35-year career, and was inducted into the Georgetown Prep Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011. He served the School's as Headmaster from 1989-1993.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Barry said, "I realize how proud I am to put in the years, the service and I would willingly do it all over again. Prep has been a very special place and will continue to be a special place for which I am particularly proud."
Established in 1981, the Insignis Medal is Georgetown Prep's highest honor. The awards name is taken from The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius Loyola.
Fr. Pilarz came to Georgetown Prep in the summer of 2014 as the School's president. He raised the School's development efforts to new heights, including alumni participation which went from 14% the year before he came to Prep to 42% this past fiscal year. Fr. Pilarz was missioned as the University of Scranton's president for a second time in the spring of 2017 and officially started that post this past July.
Fr. Pilarz opened his remarks with "It is good to be back." He added, "One of the things that has always set Georgetown Prep apart is its willingness to welcome people looking to make the world a more just and gentle place. John Carroll knew, as Prep still knows today, that the best way to make the world a more just and gentle place is to be inclusive of people from all perspectives and points of view. The Georgetown Prep I know has always opened its doors to a wide variety of students, so long as those students were committed to advancing the Greater Glory of God and the well-being of the world. To my mind, no other Jesuit secondary school does this authentically Ignatian work as well as Georgetown Prep."
The President's Councilors Dinner is held annually to honor leading donors to Georgetown Prep's Annual Fund and past winners of the Insignis Medal.
