Summer Classes

Session #1 Morning, 9-12: Leitmotifs and Lightsabers: The Music of Star Wars, taught by Mr. Brad Boyle

Considered one of the greatest franchises in film history, Star Wars is known for its unforgettable characters, stunning cinematography, and cutting-edge special effects. But what truly elevates these films to their legendary status is the music of John Williams. In this course, we will investigate the origins of the use of leitmotif, the short, recurring musical themes that act as the building blocks for the music of Star Wars. We will also look into the biography of John Williams and the musical influences that shaped his approach to composition. But most importantly, we will explore, analyze, and enjoy the musical universe Williams created to help transport countless fans to "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away."

Designed as a hands-on exploration of heroism and monstrosity, this week-long course dives into the ancient source material, as well as the contemporary theory surrounding monsters and heroes, and the reception today. Students will focus on a series of important myths, study their representation in ancient art, and discuss their reinvention in contemporary film and literature. Coupled with short scholarly readings on monster culture and hero culture, students should have a better grasp of how and why cultures of the ancient world created important myths around monsters and heroes, and how we continue this very human practice today.
