Georgetown Prep Golf

In 1924 five Prep students formed a golf team to play matches with other schools in the DC area and thus laid the groundwork for one of the outstanding sports programs in the school’s history. Mr. Frank Emmet, who managed the development of both the golf team and golf course here at Prep, was instrumental in developing high school as well as junior golf in the Washington District and helped establish the USGA Junior Golf Championship. His name adorns the championship trophy for the Individual Schoolboy golfer.

Since the early 30s the Prep Golf team has been the most successful program of all area high schools. The Prep golfers won the school’s first state championship in any sport in 1933 and then won the Inaugural Washington Metropolitan Championship in 1934 as well as the Maryland Schoolboy Championship led by the triumvirate of Frank Allen, Billy Detweiler, and Maury Nee. Prep golfers have won the Metro title 19 times with the latest coming in 2023.

Prep joined the IAC in golf in 1966 and promptly won their first league banner that year. Their latest win was their sixth straight and 7 out of the last 8. Overall, the golfers have won 38 league banners and 6 Eastern Interscholastic Championships, in addition to their Metro titles. 72 players have earned All-IAC honors, six of whom did for all four years; 30 individuals won the IAC Gold Medal and six did more than once.  32 players were selected as All-Met while four were named Player of the Year, and three won the gold medal for the individual title at the Easterns. Coach Barry has been named All-Met Coach of the Year four times including 2024.

In total 7 Prep golfers have played in USGA National Championships in the past 20 years.
