In 2020 and 2021, Kofi was selected as a U.S. State Department Gilman Future Leader in Public Health and a U.S. State Department Gilman Future Leader in Global Health. Having been invited to these Gilman Future Leader selections, he had the opportunity to meet various experts in public health and global health, including, the Former Acting Surgeon General alongside the Former President of the American Public Health Association. (It turned out that while Kofi was at Prep, he took the Former Surgeon General’s daughter to Homecoming!) Following his prolific Gilman Program experiences, through a competitive selection process, Kofi was chosen as 1 of 25 official Alumni Ambassadors to represent the U.S. State Department’s Gilman International Scholarship for 2022-2023, representing over 34,000 alumni since the program’s inception. As a Gilman Alumni Ambassador, he engaged in congressional advocacy meetings on Capitol Hill, represented the program in conferences and hosted Gilman Alumni engagement seminars. Simultaneously as a Gilman Alumni Ambassador, Kofi interned with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), working on improving the evaluation methods of early childhood mental health programs across the U.S. The intern work with SAMHSA spurred the creation of his master’s thesis work, titled, Cultural Competence: What is it? A Meta-Evaluation for Childhood Mental Health Programs.

Thinking about his time at Prep, Kofi said “It is a blessing that my younger brother, Kwaku Asamoah ’24, is able to walk through the same footsteps I walked through a decade ago. As I witness his Prep journey unwind, it is as if I have the opportunity to look at my high school self through a mirror, and see how much I have developed since my Prep days. Staff and faculty such as Karen Napolitano, Tim Wisecarver, Alvin Trask, Natalie Denney, “Q”, alongside many others, had such a big impact upon guiding me to discover my life passions. My Spanish classes with Katherine Steuart, Matt Fitzgibbons, and Antonieta Singer greatly expanded upon my global mindset to see the profound interconnectedness of our world. And best of all, the Jesuit spirituality education embedded into the curriculum prompted me to direct my purpose toward how I can best utilize the gifts that God has given me to serve the world.”

Kofi continued, “At Prep, I uncovered my passions among the intersections of science, service and culture. Prep gave me an environment in which I could develop in my Christian faith while harnessing my intellectual faculties which I could use to help make the world a better place. There are strong lifelong connections I have made with former Prep classmates and Prep staff/faculty, which have made Prep a very special place for me.”

Reflecting on what Men of Faith, Men for Others means, Kofi commented "On July 20, 2022, I had the opportunity to represent the prestigious Gilman Scholarship Program on Capitol Hill, garnering senatorial support for increased funding of the FY23 House State & Foreign Ops bill. The strenuous efforts of my colleagues and I resulted in the Senate Appropriations Committee on July 28, 2022, releasing an appropriations package including a $1 million increased funding proposal to $17 million for the Gilman International Scholarship Program in fiscal year 2023, compared to fiscal year 2022 levels. In April 2023, I was invited back to Capitol Hill with the Institute of International Education to advocate for continued support of both the Gilman and Fulbright International Scholarship Programs. I was also spotlighted on the U.S. Department of State’s LinkedIn page during February 2023 for Black History month for my dedication to global service. Knowing that my congressional advocacy can contribute to harnessing the potential of thousands of future physicians, nurses, lawyers, teachers and societal change-makers, I am imbued with limitless hope of the global impact that he can have as a global health professional.”
