Jeff Jones Posthumously Named the School's 53rd and First Lay President

The following message was sent to the Georgetown Prep community from Rev. James R. Van Dyke, S.J., on Tuesday, December 4, 2018.

Dear Members of the Georgetown Prep Community,

Last evening, on the Feast of St. Francis Xavier, the first Jesuit missionary—a man of broad reach and great heart who journeyed to the very ends of the earth in the service of Christ—we had the honor of posthumously naming Mr. Jeffrey L. Jones as President of Georgetown Preparatory School.

With this declaration, Jeff will officially be the first lay president in Georgetown Prep's 230 years.

As many of you know, Jeff was named acting president from Fall 2012 through Spring 2014, after the resignation of Fr. Michael Marco and as the Board undertook the search that brought Prep Fr. Scott Pilarz. This past summer, in conversation with Fr. Bob Hussey, the Provincial of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus who has the final say in naming the heads of Jesuit apostolates, I received permission to present a motion to the Board that Jeff be named a President of Georgetown Prep.

So I am pleased to present the following resolution passed unanimously by the Board on 10 September this year:

Whereas Jeffrey L. Jones, acting on behalf of the Board of Trustees from Fall 2012 through Spring 2014, served in the office of President of Georgetown Preparatory School;

And whereas Jeff throughout his twenty-year career, from the time he was hired as Director of Auxiliary Services, through his eight year tenure as Dean of Students and his ten years as Headmaster as well as in his time a Coach of Basketball, was unfailing in his poise as a Christian gentleman in the finest tradition of a Man for Others;

And whereas in these various roles, Jeff mentored countless students, especially those who struggled, through myriad hours and difficulties, always guiding them with the highest standards and the deepest compassion, encouraging them to academic and personal excellence, enabling many to graduate and aspire to wonderful careers through college to adult life;

And whereas Jeff welcomed the faculty and staff of Georgetown Prep as colleagues in Jesuit education and Ignatian Pedagogy, and guided them to the highest levels of cura personalis, helping to create the vital and vibrant sense of community and fraternal care that distinguishes Georgetown Prep among Jesuit schools;

And whereas, as was his wont, Jeff stepped up in a time of need to pilot this school and community that he loved as acting President, a task that he undertook with his characteristic generosity, strength, and gentleness;

Be it therefore resolved and forever known that we, the Board of Trustees of Georgetown Preparatory School, do now bestow upon Mr. Jeffrey Lynn Jones the title and office of President for the time of his service, the 53rd from the founding of the School and the 15th since its Separate Incorporation.

On a personal note, when I was a rookie principal in Atlanta, Jeff was a mentor to me as well. He had a broad reach and big heart, one that has touched countless lives within Prep and across the whole world of American Jesuit secondary education.

Jeff's portrait will be placed in among the presidents of Georgetown Preparatory School in Boland Hall forever.

Sincerely in Christ,

Rev. James R. Van Dyke, S.J.
