Remembering Dedicated Leader of Catholic Education, Robert W. Barros, III

The Georgetown Prep family prays for the soul of Robert W. Barros, III, founder of Mater Dei School in Bethesda, MD, father of alumnus Michael Barros, Class of 1986, and grandfather of Peter Barros, Class of 2023. Mr. Barros passed away on November 3, 2021, surrounded by his family at his home in Boynton Beach, FL.

Mr. Barros was a dedicated leader of Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Washington, paving the way to open Mater Dei School in 1960, with the mission to provide quality elementary Catholic education to boys. He also served as a partner to Georgetown Prep by supporting the continued tutelage and character development of young men and serving as a member of Prep's Board of Trustees.

Rev. James R. Van Dyke, S.J., President of Georgetown Preparatory School, said of Mr. Barros's impact, "We see Bob's legacy every day in the young men who come to Prep from Mater Dei. The creation of the School and its programs have added immeasurable value to Catholic education and formation for boys in our area. What a gift he gave. What a gift he has been."

A celebration of Mr. Barros' life will be held at Mater Dei School in the spring. You may find his obituary here.

May the angels lead you into paradise;
may the martyrs come to welcome you
and lead you into the holy City of Jerusalem.
May the choir of angels greet you
and like Lazarus, who is poor no more,
may you find eternal rest.
