A Legacy of the Long Snap for Prep Football
A Legacy of the Long Snap for Prep Football

Since 2011, all Prep Varsity Football long snappers have been either a Johnston or a Quinn. Fathers Brian Johnston '84 and Mark Quinn '84 were classmates at Prep and their sons have started a football tradition. Will Quinn will be graduating May 2022, ending the tradition after this fall season.

Will offered this reflection on the tradition, "Some of my most vivid childhood memories are from Saturday afternoons in the fall. The student section chants and autumnal sunlight would flood my senses as I snuck onto the field with the other younger siblings. I watched in awe as the Hoyas would fly around, pummeling Landon, Gonzaga, and the like. My time to be one of those players is here now; it arrived much sooner than I thought it would. When my brother first taught me how to long snap, I didn't understand the legacy I was shouldering. I realized sophomore year, when I was the varsity snapper, that the Johnston and Quinn era would continue, and I felt ever more proud of my position. This small part of Georgetown Prep football represents a more important tenet of the program: pride and attention to the little things."

The long snapping lineup went as follows for the fall Varsity Football seasons:

2011, 2012, 2013 - Stephen Johnston '14

2014, 2015 - Jack Quinn '16

2016, 2017, 2018 - Andrew Johnston '19

2019, 2020, 2021 - Will Quinn '22

GP Athletics Director and Head Varsity Football Coach Dan Paro '79 commented on the long snapping tradition, "Most coaches will feel this way...every summer at some point I will wake up at 2:00 a.m. panicking about the long snapper, because having a long snapper is everything! The Johnstons' and Quinns' have brought consistency to this position for the past decade. They have all had similar personalities, work ethics, and it is just a difficult, under-appreciated part of the game you have to take pride in. We've been blessed to have four phenomenal athletes and they have brought a proficiency that truly delivers success to the team...I truly appreciate the character they have shown and the dedication they have given to Prep. With this family tradition of long snappers coming to a close, I will, for the first time in a long time, wake up with a cold sweat this summer!"
