Mr. Timothy Wisecarver
Though Tim Wisecarver has insisted we not make a big deal of it, it’s impossible to let him quietly slip away after 40 years of extraordinary service to Georgetown Prep. A true legend, Tim has shaped the lives of thousands of students and transformed the very fabric of our math program.
Tim has taught every course in the math curriculum, and in many cases, he developed the curriculum himself. His innovative methods and creative approaches made learning both efficient and fun. One shining example: his Euclidean Geometry course, rooted in his love of the Great Books and inspired by his master’s work at St. John’s College. That course, with its hand-typed and hand-drawn notes, still lives on, largely unchanged, in our classrooms today.
His success in teaching AP Calculus is unmatched. Since 2011, only a handful of his students haven’t earned a perfect 5 on the AP exam...a staggering accomplishment by any standard.
But beyond the achievements and accolades, Tim has been a mentor, a colleague, and a friend. He has generously shared his knowledge, patiently guided new teachers, and filled the math office with humor and warmth. His door was always open. Sometimes just hours after a question was asked, he'd return with examples, materials, and an eagerness to help. In his final week at Prep, he spent two hours walking a colleague through the structure of BC Calculus, pulling resources from not one, not two, but three full file cabinets.
Alumni adore him. Both for his brilliant teaching and his sharp sense of humor. Tim is known for his legendary pranks, including calling former students years later to jokingly ask about overdue homework.
Former student Caleb Wilson ’17 summed it up best: “Tim was a great math teacher, but he didn’t just teach math. He taught students how to persevere. He knew what we were capable of and didn’t accept mediocrity.”
Tim’s retirement marks the end of an era at Prep, but his legacy will endure in every lesson taught, every student inspired, and every colleague grateful to have worked by his side. Thank you, Tim, you will be deeply missed!
Ms. Ann Nichols
After 11 years of devoted service, Ms. Ann Nichols is retiring from teaching at Georgetown Prep. Known for her unwavering commitment, deep care for her students, and energizing and booming voice, Ms. Nichols made an indelible mark on the Prep community.
Her classroom was famously packed after school, especially before math tests, often filled with a dozen or more students seeking her help. She made even the toughest concepts in senior Precalculus approachable, helping students who had struggled for years find success and confidence.
But Ann’s impact extended far beyond the classroom. She brought energy and warmth to campus through her tireless behind-the-scenes work, by decorating, framing, providing treats, and ensuring the environment reflected the same care she gave her students. She was a treasured mentor and colleague, especially within the Math Department.
Each fall, alumni returned hoping to find Ms. Nichols in the math office, a testament to the bonds she built. Ann’s retirement leaves a void that can’t be filled. Ms. Nichols, thank you for all you have contributed to Prep, you will be deeply missed!
Mr. Tony Ashur
After 27 years of extraordinary service, Georgetown Prep bids farewell to Mr. Tony Ashur, a visionary educator, composer, and the heart of our music program.
Hired in 1998 as Prep’s second full-time music teacher, Tony expanded what began as a single course into a vibrant, student-centered music program. He founded every major student performance group at Prep, from the Prep Singers to the String Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz Band, and A Cupola Hoyas, giving generations of young musicians the opportunity to grow and perform.
Tony brought student music back to Masses, playing the organ and piano and guiding student singers and instrumentalists. He coordinated music for funerals and weddings at the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, including those of colleagues, friends, and even two of his own children.
A dedicated teacher and multiple-time department chair, Tony also revived student involvement in musicals through his leadership and pit orchestra direction. His musical legacy includes original compositions like Men for Others, the School song, and his published arrangement of the Generosity Prayer of St. Ignatius.
From founding ensembles to installing the Chapel’s hybrid pipe organ, Tony’s influence will resonate across campus for years to come. His passion, faith, and love of music shaped the lives of countless students and colleagues.
Thank you, Tony, for nearly three decades of inspiration. You will be missed, but your music lives on at Prep.
