Grant Shimkaveg '24 earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a member of Troop 8! Troop 8 was established in Washington, DC in 1919. Grant’s Eagle Scout award is a capstone achievement after five years of pursuit and work. He earned merit badges in areas including citizenship in the community and nation, in outdoor activities including backpacking and camping, and in his particular interests including space exploration and astronomy. As part of the requirements for the Award, last summer Grant completed an Eagle Scout Service Project where he and his team improved a staircase on the Appalachian Trail near US I-70. The project required leadership, design and Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) approval, planning, logistics, and implementation; over 325 service hours contributed to the community by Grant and his team. The staircase is used by an estimated 1000 hikers per week in peak summer season. Contributing participants to the project from Georgetown Prep were Quinn Snyder '24, Davis Oeltmann '24, and Ethan Oeltmann '25. Congratulations Grant!
