Dr.  John Hanrahan '79 has devoted himself to serving underprivileged communities, and providing healthcare to those who need it most. As a family practice physician, he has witnessed the profound inequities in our healthcare system and has responded with action. He co-founded two incredible organizations to bridge this gap, both founded in 1999.

The Hope Alliance, based in Park City, Utah, is a non-profit organization that brings vision care and eyeglasses to underserved communities around the world. John has personally led numerous international expeditions, collaborating with local organizations, doctors, and volunteers to set up temporary clinics and provide vital eye care to those in need. His efforts have reached people in Utah, Guatemala, Uganda, and Mexico, giving the gift of sight to thousands while helping prevent eye diseases caused by sun exposure. But his work doesn’t stop at vision care — John has gone beyond his medical practice to spearhead microeconomic workshops, empowering communities to build sustainable livelihoods, and has led efforts to improve access to clean water, recognizing that health is about more than just medical care.

In his own community, John impact is equally profound. The People’s Health Clinic in Round Valley, Utah, serves uninsured residents of Summit and Wasatch Counties. From its humble beginnings in a mobile van, the clinic has grown into a full-time facility that provided care during over 13,000 patient visits in 2021 alone.

John's numerous awards include the Rotary International "Service above Self" Award, the National Community Leadership Award, and recognition from the People’s Health Clinic itself. Yet, beyond the accolades, what drives this Hoya is something much deeper — a commitment to living out the Jesuit ideal of being "a man for others," a challenge he embraced during his time here at Georgetown Prep. As Fr.  Pedro Arrupe, S.J., said, Jesuit education is about forming "men who will not live for themselves but for the least of their neighbors." John embodies this mission in every aspect of his life.

For his lifelong dedication to others and his unwavering commitment to justice in healthcare, we are proud to present Dr.  John Hanrahan with the first 2024 Georgetown Prep Alumnus of the Year Award. His work reminds us of the profound impact one individual can have on countless lives, and he stands as an inspiration to us all.

Congratulations, John, and thank you for showing us what it means to be a true man for and with others.

Starting out as an Account Executive in 1978, he steadily worked his way to become President and CEO in 2003 and then Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board in 2021. He is widely known for his strategic leadership in continuing the legacy of his father in creating one of the most successful Trane franchises in the United States by evolving the industry and growing the company’s capabilities. The franchise has now been around for more than 60 years, with more than 400 employees.
