In Memoriam: Francis J. "Franny" Gleason
It is with great sadness that Georgetown Prep reports of the sudden passing of former longtime Prep coach Francis J. “Franny” Gleason. Mr. Gleason, 82, died on Tuesday, February 19, in Laytonsville, Maryland.
Mr. Gleason began his 27-year career at Georgetown Prep in 1961, coaching freshman basketball and football, as well as JV baseball. In 1962, Mr. Gleason joined Coach Jim Fegan on the varsity football staff as an assistant line coach. Mr. Gleason also served as the head coach of Prep’s varsity baseball team for several seasons.
In 1969, Mr. Gleason began a 19-year tenure as Prep’s varsity basketball coach. In his first season, he guided Prep to a stunning 38-34 victory over national powerhouse, St. Anthony’s, then coached by Hall of Fame Coach John Thompson.
Mr. Gleason, who retired from coaching at Prep in 1988, was inducted into Prep’s Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the second class, in 2008.

Arrangements are as follows: Wake will be held at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, Maryland, on Thursday, February 21, from 2:00PM to 4:00PM and 6:00PM to 8:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Georgetown Prep’s Chapel of Our Lady on Friday, February 22, at 11:00AM.

Receive his soul and present him to God the Most High.
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord,
And let perpetual light shine upon him.
