Earlier this month, Georgetown Prep students had the opportunity to participate in two unique Special Olympics events. The events, organized by the Washington DC chapter of the Special Olympics, provided athletes with disabilities the opportunity to train and compete in basketball and bowling.
On February 3, Prep hosted the Special Olympics 5th Annual Maryland State Basketball Qualifier Tournament in the Hanley Center for Athletic Excellence. Members of Prep’s varsity and junior varsity teams volunteered for the event, which drew over 200 athletes.
Prep’s freshman class volunteered on February 5 and February 7 at the Special Olympics qualifying bowling tournament. Freshmen helped the athletes keep score, assisted athletes in wheelchairs and, most importantly, were their biggest cheerleaders.
As part of its Christian Service Program, Prep offers students numerous opportunities to practice being Men for Others.
In an increased effort to provide emphasis and reflection on serving others, beginning in the 2013-14 academic year, the number of service hours required for all sophomores and juniors will increase to 20 hours.
