The Hanley Center for Athletic Excellence strengthens Georgetown Prep’s commitment to the Ignatian ideal of building a sound mind, body and spirit. It provides a greater opportunity for students, faculty and staff to participate in intramural and recreational activities while offering much needed space for interscholastic teams.

The athletic center houses facilities that students can use during the day and may be rented on a limited basis. A weight room, natatorium and 50,000-square-foot field house containing an indoor track and four practice courts allow students to be involved in some type of activity before, during, and after school.

Field House

The field house contains a regulation length 200-meter indoor track that will allow officially timed indoor meets. The track is made of a seamless rubberized material poured in place by Beynon Sports Surfaces, one of the leading manufactures of athletic flooring.

Inside the 200-meter track are four full-size basketball courts. Drop curtains are available for baseball practice in inclement weather.

Basketball Arena

This arena-style gym features classic hardwood floors and can accommodate more than 1,000 spectators on game day, not to mention room for overflow crowds on the overlooking balconies. The basketball arena includes a 12,450-square-foot hardwood court. It serves as the home court of the Little Hoyas and is large enough to accommodate two full court games without spectators, or one interscholastic competition with up to 1,000 spectators.

Natatorium

The indoor pool is a central focus of the Center for Athletic Excellence. The pool utilizes state-of-the-art technology and design that makes it one of the fastest pools in Montgomery County. The pool has 11 lanes that are used for domestic (yards) and international (meters) time standards.

The natatorium scoreboard is electrically connected to touch pads on either end of the pool, allowing times to be instantaneously displayed during meets. A 12.5-foot diving well with two 1-meter diving boards creates a diving well, allowing competitive diving meets to occur on the Prep campus.

There is an extensive spectator area for 250 overlooking the natatorium, providing visitors with views from two vantage points: looking down each lane and across the lanes. The L-shaped seating for spectators is suspended above the pool, offering excellent views of both swimming and diving events.

Please note that for the safety of our community and guests, the pool does close when lightning and/or thunder are present in the area for 30 minutes past the last strike.
