About Georgetown Preparatory School: Georgetown Preparatory School, a college preparatory
day and boarding school for boys, is located on a beautiful 95-acre campus just outside Washington, D.C. The School and its parent institution, Georgetown University, were founded in Washington in 1789. In 1919, the School was moved to its present location in North Bethesda, Maryland. Operated by the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic Order, Georgetown Prep provides students an ideal educational environment as well as the opportunity to visit our nation’s capital and attend weekly events of cultural and entertainment interest.
Aim of the Program: This summer program offers intensive audio-lingual training in English for young people of high-school age (14–17 years) with or without previous knowledge of English, supplemented by a schedule of recreational and social activities. Although the aim of the program is to teach English, it also offers young people the opportunity to experience international living.
Instruction: All students receive four and one-half hours of instruction per weekday, including one hour of conversation or debate. In addition, they receive one to two hours of supervised homework each day. The teaching staff is made up of personnel trained to teach English as a foreign language. At the beginning of the course, students are tested and placed according to their previous knowledge of English. The TOEFL exam is available. A certificate of achievement is awarded upon successful completion of the course.
Activities: Students will take part in daily, after school recreational activities, lasting until about six o’clock, all under the guidance of counselors. Facilities available at Georgetown Prep include a new swimming pool, a new 200 meter indoor track, tennis courts, soccer and baseball fields, a nine-hole golf course, and a new 3 court gymnasium. Weekend activities include guided tours of places of interest in nearby Washington, D.C. Social life on campus includes parties with American students as guests.
Summer Scholars Program: The Summer Scholars program presents a unique opportunity to meet with noted guest speakers, U.S. Congressional representatives and other renowned economic and political figures. Special programs in Debate and Model International Organization Simulations will be offered.
Student Counseling: One of the School’s chief functions is building moral and spiritual values in the young people it is charged with educating. Although the program is non-sectarian, personal counseling of this kind is available to all students. Catholic students will be encouraged to take advantage of opportunities for Mass and group prayer.
Housing: Dormitories for boys and girls are located in separate buildings. Students are under careful supervision of adult counselors. Students receive three balanced meals a day. A doctor and nurse are on call at all times. The school provides accident insurance.
Day students: The program is also open to day students. Their tuition includes weekday activities, in which all students are expected to participate. There is an additional fee for weekend activities.
