The year 2012 has already brought some exciting news and fame for Prep alumni John Hibey ’01 and Patrick Taylor ’00.

Hibey and Taylor were among the team that produced “Fishing Without Nets,” a story of pirates in Somalia, told from the perspective of the pirates themselves. The majority of the film was shot in Kenya.

Hibey co-wrote and co-produced the film. Taylor was behind the film’s music composition. Both are Washington natives.

The film made the cut for the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and won the Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking. The honor was announced at a ceremony in Park City, Utah on Tuesday, January 24. Yahoo! presented the film with a $5,000 award.

Of the nearly 7,000 short films submitted to the Festival, 64 films were accepted into the Short Film program. In its citation of the film, the Sundance jury noted:

“By approaching a story of epic scope with an intimate perspective, this visually stunning film creates a rare, inside point of view that humanizes a global story.”
