Senior Rami Bedewi has been busy working on a special project this past year - constructing a single person hybrid electric commuter vehicle. His goal was to use off-the-shelf components to build a vehicle capable of achieving over 200 miles per gallon on normal road conditions. A car enthusiast from young, Rami’s interest grew from enjoying cars to finding ways to integrate performance, efficiency and new technology into his interest.
Rami plans to test it on real road conditions with a drive from New York City to Washington, DC, using a combination of a battery powered electric motor and a generator with one gallon of fuel. The distance is about 240 miles so he has called it the One Gallon Challenge. The project is being sponsored by various local automotive companies and organizations. The drive that was originally planned for Monday, January 30 was postponed due to pending approval from the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) to get the vehicle registered. Once approved, a new date for the ride will be determined.
