Carey Smith, '92

Carey Smith has been teaching Latin at Prep for over five years. He is the chair of the Classics Language Department and is also an accomplished musician. He talks about his love for Prep and all things jazz.

1. How is Prep a different school now than it was when you were here?

The academic climate at Prep seems to me more intense since my tenure as a student here; though it was very rigorous in the classroom, the Advanced Placement courses had yet to enjoy their sudden and unchecked proliferation. Athletics too seem to be taken more seriously. Having said that, I believe that the rift between student and athlete has been greatly reduced and that the faculty, staff and coaches ought to be proud. The boys really seem to care for one another.

Prep Wrestling:

Under the coaching of Mike Kubik, '87, and Joe Spelta, Prep wrestling has become one of the best in the area.

Eric Fessel, '10, 2009 IAC Champ and IAC Outstanding Wrestler, can now add State Champ to his resume. He won the title with a dramatic first period pin in the finals against an accomplished wrestler from John Carroll. Along the way, he beat wrestlers from Loyola, St. Paul’s and DeMatha. Eric will join previous Prep state champs with the honor of a permanent state champ plaque in Prep’s wrestling room.

Overall, Prep placed 5th out of 30 teams behind #1 Mount St. Joe’s, #2 McDonogh, #3 Spalding, and only 1 point behind #4 Curley. Nine of 14 Hoya wrestlers placed with 7 qualifying for this weekend’s National Prep tournament. Prep had three 3rd place finishers: 130 took third after a controversial 2 overtime loss to the ultimate weight class champ in the semi-finals; 152 took third by battling back through the consolation rounds after a 1 point loss in the quarter-finals; and 189 took third after another 2OT loss in the semi-finals. Other placers included: 112 – 8th; 119 – 7th; 125 – 6th; 140 – 6th; 171 – 6th. The top 6 in each weight class qualify for the National Prep tournament.

The progress of Prep’s program continues to astound. It is now recognized as one of the leading wrestling programs in the DC Metro area. Notables include: 5 straight IAC team titles, team rankings in the Washington Post and Montgomery Gazette, consistent top 5 tournament team finishes, Prep All Americans, State Champs, IAC Champs, Tournament Champs, individual wrestlers consistently ranked among the best in Maryland, etc. Prep’s program will continue to, in Coach Kubik’s immortal words, “get better” through the hard work and dedication of Coaches Mike Kubik and Joe Spelta and JV Coach Danny Spelta. We’re looking forward to seeing you out at a match next season.

Argentine Exchange Program Flourishes In Second Year

It is not unusual these days at Georgetown Prep to hear “hola” and other Spanish words down the halls, in the South Room and after school.

From February 1 to March 7, Prep is hosting ten students from Argentina as part of a cultural exchange program with Colegio del Salvador, a Jesuit school in Buenos Aires.

For five weeks, the students will attend classes with their Prep hosts, and take a special class on American idioms, culture and history specific to the places they will visit while in the United States. Among the activities planned for their stay, the students will tour cultural attractions in Washington, D.C, and visit New York City over the President’s Day weekend.
