Hoya Profiles: Meet Louie Lopez '81
thumb_Louie Lopez.jpg

Louie Lopez '81 works and lives in Kensington, Maryland with his wife Liz.  Louie's son Trey is a sophomore here at Prep and plays on the JV football team. Louie and Liz also have a daughter who is a freshman at the University of Delaware.  Louie currently works for Fidelity and Trust  Mortgages in Bethesda, Maryland. We caught up with Louie to talk  to him about his Prep experience.

What were some of the important lessons you learned while you were a student at Prep?

While at Prep, I learned the value of friendships. Most of my friends today are my buddies from my Prep days. We (the Prep community) are so incredibly blessed. Most people don’t have friends that they have known most of their lives. Friends that you can count on and always will be there for you. I also learned the value of hard work. It truly is about effort. You will feel good about yourself regardless of the outcome if you have given lots of effort.

Did your educational experience at Prep give you a strong foundation for life?

I had wonderful teachers at Prep that enabled me to have a good foundation for when I entered college at the University of Notre Dame. This foundation allowed me to have a successful college experience which then led to the ability for me to enter the working world. The experiences that I have from Prep and college have allowed me to interact with other people in the business world and also with my customers.

After Prep, where did you attend college and in what ways do you feel Prep prepared you for college?

I was fortunate enough to attend the University of Notre Dame along with 7 other fellow graduates from Georgetown Prep. The educational experiences from Georgetown Prep are not too different from what I experienced in the classroom at Notre Dame. While at the University of Notre Dame, I sometimes felt like I was still attending Georgetown Prep.

Annual Scott Smith Alumni Hockey Night

The annual Scott Smith Memorial Hockey Game and Dinner will take place the night before Thanksgiving, November 26, at Cabin John Ice Rink in Bethesda. The game will begin at 5:45 p.m.

The Hockey Alumni Game was started in the mid ‘90s by Scott Smith, '75, as a “friendly match” between Prep's varsity  team and a team of Prep alumni. After Scott died suddenly in June 2003 the event was re-named in Scott's honor.

A dinner for all players and friends will follow the game at the Hanley Athletic Center For Athletic Excellence on Prep’s campus. At the dinner, the winner of the Scott Smith Award for service to the Prep hockey program will be announced. Last year’s winner, Bob Kemp, will turn over the trophy, designed after the Stanley Cup, to the new winner.

Proceeds from the event go to the Scott Smith Scholarship Fund.

Those Prep alumni, who are not on the road in the NHL that night, try to make it back and play. For those not willing to strap ‘em on again, face paint and riotous behavior in the student section will be encouraged.

Contact John Marcus at marcus@mmhdc.com for more information.

KAIROS 49 Information:

Kairos 49 will take place October 7-10, from the end of school on Tuesday (October 7th) until Friday evening (October 10th). You are most welcome to attend the closing ceremony in the chapel at Prep on Friday evening, October 10th, at 5:30 pm.

If you are able to write a letter to one or more of the retreatants,  a link to the list of those attending Kairos 49 is included below. As you know, letters from alumni are an important part of the retreat and mean a great deal.

For those of you who are not aware of what Kairos is, it is a four day, spiritual retreat that is based on the exercises of St. Ignatius, with each day of the retreat coinciding with one week of the exercises. At Prep, students go on Kairos during their junior year, and while on the retreat they will spend a great deal of time reflecting on God’s presence in their lives through a series of talks, activities and small group discussions. The theme of the second evening of the retreat is the experience of the love of God. This is where the letters are used. The purpose of the letters is to affirm God’s love in the lives of each retreatant by encouraging the retreatant, pointing out his significant qualities, highlighting experiences and/or memories shared together, advising for the future, etc. On the second night of the retreat, the retreatants will have the opportunity to read these letters and through them experience God’s love.

If you are writing a letter, you may send it to the retreatant in one of four ways:

1) E-mail your letter to John DeCaro at Prep: jdecaro@gprep.org. Make sure that your letter is e-mailed by Monday, October 6th. Send a separate e-mail for each letter you are sending. Be sure to include the full name of the retreatant in the heading (not just his first name).

2) Send your letter by traditional mail, in care of John DeCaro at Georgetown Prep, 10900 Rockville Pike, North Bethesda, MD 20852. Be sure to mail your letter so that it arrives by October 6th.

3) Fax your letter to the attention of John DeCaro at 301-493-5905. Again, be sure to fax your letter by Monday, October 6th.

4) Drop your letter off in the headmaster’s office at Prep and ask that it be placed in the mailbox of John DeCaro.

Thanks ahead of time for taking the time to write letters. Most importantly, please keep the retreatants and the team members in your prayers during the week of Oct 7-10.
