Immersion Service Trips

Georgetown Prep’s service program is at the core of the school’s mission to form young adults with a life-long commitment to the Jesuit ideal of justice shaped by faith. Prep’s service program requires each student to provide direct interpersonal service to a community in need, such as the poor, the disabled, the elderly or the sick. The service program aims to develop a deep commitment to the community by forming a strong relationship with the people being served.

At the end of their junior year, students are offered the opportunity to participate in one of Prep’s summer immersion trips - to New Orleans, Ivanhoe, Va., or the Dominican Republic, where they learn to make a difference in these communities while living out their responsibilities as “Men for Others.”

Prep continues its efforts in these communities annually and students often mention these trips as one of the highlights of their time at Prep.

New Orleans

The Second Line, Georgetown Prep's annual service trip to New Orleans, offers students an opportunity to help with the rebuilding effort and to see first-hand the determination of residents to restore the city and its spirit. Groups of students, staff, parents and alumni have been helping with the rebuilding effort every year since Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Crescent City.

Dominican Republic

Students participating in the Somos Amigos trip spend two weeks in the Dominican Republic living and working with rural Dominican communities in order to provide aqueducts, concrete floors, and community centers. Immersed in small-town Dominican culture, the Somos Amigos group attempts to appreciate the simplicity of daily life without modern amenities while reflecting upon the lack of social justice throughout impoverished regions of the world.

Ivanhoe, Va.

When mining in this area of the Appalachians ceased, Ivanhoe’s main source of income was gone and the town continues to struggle to survive. Prep's trip to this southwestern Virginia town offers students a view of what life is like in Appalachia. Students perform a variety of service work, much of it manual labor, and have the opportunity to meet and visit with the people they are helping.
