| Ed Joyce |
Edward Joyce, a beloved member of Georgetown Prep's faculty for 36 years, died in 2002 at the age of 87. The impact he had on students while a teacher at Prep is enormous; the impact of his generosity will continue to benefit students and teachers long after his death.
Joyce never married—he considered Prep his family and bequeathed his entire estate to Prep. He set a leadership example for others. He gave of himself throughout his life and continues to honor Prep through his bequest.
Joyce is fondly remembered by generations of faculty and students at Prep as a witty teacher with a fondness for puns and a keen interest in the welfare of his students. He could be a strict disciplinarian, but had the proverbial heart of gold. He taught English, Latin, math, the social sciences and often taught Latin as Pig Latin. He moderated many of the clubs including the Instrumental Group and the Glee Club. He was known for his pithy sayings and exhortations "to be different." When he retired in 1986, the senior class dedicated their yearbook to him. Even after his retirement, Ed graced the halls of Prep at many of the reunions, spring galas and Christmas parties.
Joyce's dedication to Prep and his generosity are acknowledged annually with the John Edward Joyce Award, a cash award that recognizes either a student or faculty member who best exemplifies Prep's core values and ideals.
