| Galvin Cup Winners from the Class of 2002 |
Spectacular Dunks. Acrobatic blocks. Brilliant sharpshooting. These were just a few of the amazing skills on display at the 2010 Alumni Basketball Tournament held Reunion Weekend at the Hanley Center. Classes ranging from the early 2000’s through 1987 laced up their Air Jordan’s (or Chuck Taylor’s) and recaptured the hardwood glory of their youth. Special recognition goes to Ed Powell, who turned back the clock and represented the Class of 1985 as the oldest player in the tournament.
The highlight of the day took place in the hardscrabble matchup between the Class of 1987 and the Class of 2004. 2004 appeared to have an easy fast break layup when Dean Campbell came out of nowhere to literally reject the ball out of the gym. As Jim Enright observed, “It was like watching the Incredible Hulk jump off a trampoline!” It seems the Dean of Dunk is now the Sultan of Swat.
But ultimately, the youth and power of the defending champs of 2004 wore down the old-timers and 1987 had to settle for a third place finish. The championship game featured the upstarts from 2002 against the defending champs. Clutch 3-point shooting by Tom “Jimmy Chitwood” Boyland was the difference as 2002 rolled in the finals and captured the 2nd Annual Galvin Cup. For his late-game heroics, Tom was awarded MVP of the Tournament.
After all was said and done, the players put the “chippy” play aside and enjoyed a great post-game celebration in the company of fellow alums. Special thanks to Brian Ridgway, '89, for restoring this incredible tradition. The tradition will continue next year during Reunion Weekend at the Hanley Center. Who’s got next?
