2010 Alumni Turkey Bowl: A Tradition Unlike Any Other By Rob Clark, ‘87
The Alumni Turkey Bowl tradition is back at Georgetown Prep. On a blustery Thanksgiving Saturday on Fegan-Galvin Field, over 50 alumni put heir hamstrings on the line for one more shot at glory. A new group of young challengers from the Class of 2006 joined last year’s seasoned veterans to stake a claim to the Turkey Bowl Championship.
The road to the title was filled with hard hits, acrobatic catches and spectacular touchdowns. In a gritty matchup that turned back the clocks, the “Super 80s” met the “Super 90s” in an instant classic to decide who would take on the Young Guns of 2007 in the championship game.
A blatant offensive pass interference call on Brendan Fry, ’92, nullified the potential winning touchdown for the Super 90s. In overtime, the Super 80s gutted out a heroic victory by drilling a 35-yard field goal into gale force winds for the 9-6 win. It was the defining moment of the 2010 Turkey Bowl!
Ultimately, the hurry-up offense utilized by the Young Guns of 2007 proved too much for the aging warriors from the Super 80s. The Class of 2007 breezed to their second straight Turkey Bowl Championship and joyously hoisted the trophy in triumph.
Can 2007 pull off the three-peat next year? Will the youth of 2006 or the spirit and power of 2000 prove too much? Can the old men turn back the clocks one more time for another shot at Turkey Bowl fame? Please join us next year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to find out. Hoya Saxa. |
