Georgetown Prep Athletic Hall of Fame Bylaws    

The Georgetown Prep Athletic Hall of Fame Steering Committee adopts the following bylaws for the Selection Committee:
 

I. Nominations

  • Nominations may be made by anyone.
  • The Selection Committee will develop a form upon which nominations will be made. The form must be completed and the qualifications of the proposed inductee must be set forth in the form.
  • The Selection Committee shall have the discretion to narrow the field of nominees.

 

II. Eligibility/Criteria

Athletes

  • Eligible 10 years after graduation from Prep
  • Must be a Prep graduate (selection committee will have discretion in unique, special circumstance (e.g. death, or accident)

Criteria

  • Athletic ability, sportsmanship, Ignatian character, leadership, contribution to team and the games he participated in
  • Committee may also consider post graduate activities including college and professional experience
  • Committee may consider other factors including the following accomplishments: All-league, all metropolitan designation, any individual or team championship, any record or winning streak, league leader in recognized statistical category, Alumni Memorial Medal winner, James G. Fegan Medal Award

Coaches

  • Any coach with 10 years coaching experience at Prep (the Committee may make exceptions as to years experience in unique, special circumstances)

Criteria

  • Coaching ability, loyalty to Prep, teaching ability, leadership, Ignatian character athletic expertise, contribution to their teams and to the sports they coached

Administrators

Criteria

  • Exceptional leadership, Ignatian character, great loyalty to Prep and the passion for the success of Prep athletics (can include volunteers, not limited to staff or administration)

Teams

Criteria

  • Championship teams which have attained record status

 

III. Selection Committee Structure

Name - Georgetown Prep Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee

Purpose - Athletics foster the growth of young men in body, mind and spirit; they are an integral part of the school's educational program. In practice and competition one learns basic human and Ignatian values. The purpose of the Georgetown Prep Athletic Hall of Fame is to formally recognize and publicly honor:

  • those who have distinguished themselves in athletic endeavors while at Prep,
  • those who have contributed significantly to the program's growth and spirit, and whose mature years continue to reflect a character informed with the basic human and Ignatian values of integrity, excellence, teamwork, self-discipline, perseverance, humility desire, heart, and care for others.

The Committee will be responsible for the planning and staging the annual induction ceremony/dinner and developing the Hall of Fame display area in the new athletic center.

The Committee shall consist of 15 members. Standing members of the Committee will be the Director of Athletics, the Director of Alumni Affairs and a representative from the Georgetown Prep Alumni Association, Inc. The Athletic Director shall appoint 2 at-large members. The Steering Committee shall appoint the other 10 members and going forward the Selection Committee shall elect new members as terms expire.

The terms of Committee members shall be staggered so that at a minimum 3 new members will rotate on each year as terms expire. The initial Committee shall have three members who shall have 2 year initial terms, three members who shall have 3-year initial terms, three members who shall have 4 year initial terms and three members who shall have 5 year initial terms. Members elected to replace the initial members shall serve three year terms and their successors shall serve three year terms.

The Committee shall elect a Chairman, a Secretary and an Archivist. The Chairman shall manage the Committee's affairs and conduct its meetings. The Archivist shall be responsible for verifying information submitted with nominations and with preserving Prep athletic records.

The Committee shall be composed of members from different eras of Prep sports history, from different sports and shall reflect the diversity of the Prep community

The first year the Committee shall induct between 20 and 30 members of the Hall of Fame. The second year the Committee shall induct between 10 and 20 members. In the third year and in years thereafter, the Committee shall induct up to 5 members. The Committee shall vote on the nominees it determines suitable for consideration and a two-thirds vote of members present is required for induction with a quorum of two-thirds of the Committee required for a vote.

The Bylaws may be amended upon a vote of two-thirds of the members of the Committee.

The Committee shall elect new members by vote of a majority of members voting and two-thirds of the members of the Committee is required as a quorum for any such vote.

Upon a nominee's election, the Committee shall notify the nominee of his election and verify his acceptance and determine whether he will participate in the induction ceremony.

Nomination and selection of the inductees shall occur in April of each year and the induction ceremony will occur in the fall (Selection Committee will decide when the dinner will occur, suggestions are Homecoming or Friday of Thanksgiving weekend).

The Selection Committee shall operate under the auspices of the Office of Development.
