About the College Counseling Office

The College Counseling Office at Georgetown Prep works with students and parents during the college selection and application process. The office is staffed by the Director of College Counseling, another College Counselor, and an administrative assistant.

Georgetown Prep is a member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling, The College Board, and other professional and educational organizations related to the college admissions process. The school is represented at regional and national meetings of these organizations.

Each fall, Georgetown Prep hosts more than 130 representatives from colleges around the country. Many colleges interview applicants at Prep. Twenty to thirty colleges hold area-wide receptions at Prep, and, in late winter, a Jesuit Colleges and Universities Fair is held on the Prep campus. Prep also participates in the College Fair that is sponsored by Washington-area independent schools in early May.

In the course of a Prep junior's second semester, his college selection process gains momentum. In January, a program begins in various class periods when the College Counselors introduce the search process and key aspects of selecting a college. Essay-writing and interviewing skills are emphasized.

In late January, the College Counselors hold an evening meeting for the parents of juniors to introduce them to the college selection process at Prep.

Individual meetings with students and parents take place throughout the second semester of junior year, at the end of the summer, and throughout the first semester of senior year. A College Counseling newsletter is e-mailed weekly to seniors and their parents during the fall semester. The College Counseling Office also offers three after-school College Essay Workshops in the first quarter of senior year.

Through the College Counseling Office at Prep, students are offered as much assistance as they need, but they are strongly encouraged to recognize their responsibilities in selecting the college they will eventually attend. These responsibilities include examination of their goals, researching colleges that can help them achieve their goals, and completing and sending applications and other required materials.

The College Counselors write a personal recommendation letter for each Prep student and forward this letter, transcripts, and other documentation to each school on a student’s college application list. The College Counselors also review essays, provide practice interviews, and communicate with colleges about the status of applications.

All Georgetown Prep students plan to continue their studies in college. Prep students are encouraged to select a college where they will be happy, academically challenged, and successful.
