The Arts at Prep

The Arts are an important part of the Prep experience. In the spirit of developing the whole person, students are encouraged to actively pursue their interests in the fine arts. Opportunities abound for all students, not just for those who may be gifted in art.

Students have the option to take visual art classes, including studio art, digital photography and art history. The Prep Players, Prep's theater group, performs three productions each school year. Instrumental and vocal music is offered before school and students perform at winter and spring concerts, as well as at Masses and other events throughout the year.

Students who play in bands outside of school have the opportunity to perform with their groups during Oasis, a battle of the bands event that is well attended by students and faculty members alike.

Visual Arts

The art program at Prep encourages students to think creatively and critically. There are various courses students can take, depending on interests and goals.

All freshmen take Freshman Art, an introductory half-year course to help build a foundation in visual and cultural literacy. Classes such as Methods and Materials, Glass Art Studio and Digital Photography are subsequently offered with departmental approval. Advanced classes such as Senior Studio Art, AP Studio Art, AP Art History are offered to highly motivated students, with the opportunity to build their own portfolio and undertake further exploratory work.

Music

The music department at Prep offers several courses and the opportunity to be a part of a performing arts group. Students can join the Concert Band, Jazz Band, String Ensemble or the Prep Singers. Under the direction of three of Prep's musical directors, students come together for two annual concerts and other performance opportunities.

Music I is a class that offers students an introductory overview of music, with a focus on music history and appreciation.

Theater

The Prep Players is the group of talented young men and women who devote themselves to creating magic on Prep's stage. The Prep Players consists of Prep students and a handful of dedicated girls from schools such as Good Counsel, the Academy of the Holy Cross, Georgetown Visitation, Stone Ridge, and a few others.

The Players perform three productions every year in Prep's Figge Theater. Recent past shows have included a variety of plays, musicals and shows such as Godspell, the Foreigner and Evita. The Prep Players have also undertaken new opportunities, hosting the first annual “One Act Festival,” a shared student-directed production with actors and directors from Stone Ridge. In the spring of 2011, the Players staged John Steinbeck's classic Of Mice and Men.
